What is a good alternative for Windows Live Messenger?

I want a program that I can use to IM with my hotmail contacts.
I don’t want to use a web messenger.
I get an error saying “Can not log in because internet explorer can’t connect to the internet” I have tried everything but my firefox still works fine.
Microsoft is screwing up the entire computer market.
So please any non-microsoft program for using my hotmail address to instant message or at least that i could use to chat with all my hotmail contacts would be great.

Try Pidgin (www.pidgin.im) it handles all types of messenger services (including Microsoft). You can also use Yahoo Messenger to talk to Windows Live users.
Sounds like you need to config your proxy settings.
But you can always try Yahoo IM or AIM. don’t be surprised if you see the same message. If you do,Proxy settings need to be changed.

I second the recommendation of Pidgin.
And I agree with your sentiments about Microsoft. I refuse to have their lousy products contaminating my computer.
