VPS Hosting: It is called virtual private server because it appears to you that you are alone on the machine, but you are not. The machine resources are shared among number of other users, who use same Virtual Server hosting, and appear to be on the same machine as you. VPS hosting provide you with less resources, but the site bandwidth that you are given is probably “Unlimited”.
There is a catch with that “Unlimited” thingy, you don’t possess a lot of hard drive space, so you can’t really overload the server with your data traffic. Virtual Servers may give you your dedicate IP address, but not all the providers provide it. Good thing about the VPS hosting is that they come with basic control panel, which you can use for most of your needs, and its free of charge.
VPS hosting is good for people who need to put up some standard website, which is not hungry for system resources, and doesn’t need anything special. If you are planning a website, mainly for serving web documents VPS hosting is a solution for you, because it’s cheaper than dedicated servers. If you are planning to run some Internet applications that aren’t related to web, ftp, and email, and have a good knowledge if the target OS and the software, or hire a system admin to do the job for you – your choice is Dedicated servers.
If you are planning to run game server or irc server – there are special hosting solutions for that. Dedicated server is a good choice for you if you plan to have multiple websites, you can save a lot of money on purchasing VPS hosting, but again, knowledge is required. Some of the VPS Hosting Plans give you free domain which is also a catch. So, if you have to run a simple website, but with dedicated IP address (Get better Google ranking) lookup the appropriate hosting solution.
